Northland’s
newest emergency rescue helicopter has been given $12,000 to buy
navigation and communication equipment by a life insurance company.
The
Northland Emergency Services Trust (NEST), which recently bought a
second Sikorsky rescue chopper, was given the grant to buy Global
Positioning System navigation and communication equipment from the
Sovereign Spirit sponsorship initiative.
NEST
chairman John Bain is delighted with the support, saying Sovereign
Spirit’s furndraising efforts to aid the purchase of the GPS equipment
will assist in enabling Northland’s new rescue helicopter to fly in
all weather conditions.
NEST’s
existing helicopter saw record levels of use in 2004, and New Year’s
Day set a busy benchmark for 2005 with five call outs.
Sovereign
head of marketing and product development Vena Crawley said the summer
holiday period is a busy one for emergency services around New Zealand
and helping to bring a new rescue helicopter to the Northland Region is
a great opportunity for Sovereign Spirit.
The
Sovereign Spirit sponsorship allows Sovereign staff to determine each
month what health related community charity will receive a donation.
In addition to a lump sum payment, charities also receive money
raised through Sovereign’s Spirit Day, a monthly casual dress day.
