Kids Get Chance to Give Helicopter Facelift
Northern Advocate, 15th May 2004

The Northland Electricity rescue helicopter could be in line for a colourful make-over with Northland youngsters being given the chance to design its next colour scheme.

The big white helicopter - a Sikorsky S76 - is due for a repaint before November and the trust which operates it wants youngsters from the region to come up with an exciting and dynamic colour scheme for it.

John Bain, Chaiman of the Northland Emergency Services Trust (NEST), which operates the rescue chopper, said he wanted to see if a young Northlander could come up with a good colour scheme for the machine. "It will cost between $15,000 and $20,000 to repaint so it's important that we get it right first time", Mr Bain said.

He suggested that green, which was the colour of first aid, red for emergencies, or blue, to represent Northland may be used but there were no rules as to which colour must be used. "People don't have to be bound by these colours. If somebody comes up with a flash looking one we would look at that," Mr bain said.

The top of the machine's tail boom and part of its back fin had to be a dark colour. The person who designs the winning colour scheme will be taken on a trip in the helicopter, along with a couple of friends, for an aerial look at Northland.
